GREENVILLE, S.C. (Sept. 10, 2003)—Michelin North America Inc. will donate $500 for every minute its Uniroyal spokeswoman plays in the 2003 World Cup—plus $50,000 in equipment for every goal she scores—to communities where its dealers support youth soccer leagues.
Julie Foudy, captain of the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team and spokeswoman for the tire maker's Uniroyal brand, played for 429 minutes in her 1999 World Cup appearance, Michelin said. She scored one goal in six games of that series. The 2003 World Cup is Sept. 20 to Oct. 12.
“Like millions of Americans, we'll be cheering the team on again this fall, and we'll be cheering particularly loud for Julie because the more she contributes to the team, the more we will contribute to youth soccer programs across America,” said Tim Jamison, Uniroyal brand director for Michelin.
Michelin said it has raised more than $3.5 million for youth soccer over the past four years. A spokeswoman said this year 1,100 Michelin dealers are working with 900 soccer leagues across the country.
