TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (Aug. 7, 2003) — TRW Automotive plans to launch its new occupant weight-sensing system and direct tire pressure monitoring system for the 2004 model year.
TRW said it will introduce the tire pressure system for a major Japanese vehicle manufacturer for 2004 vehicles. The system, dubbed the “EnTire Solution,” was developed with cooperation from Michelin, TRW said. The system can detect which tire is underinflated as well as warn the driver when there will be a low-pressure tire problem in the near future. Advanced monitoring algorithms also are aimed at detecting slow leaks while reducing false warnings, which can lead to driver apathy, TRW said.
The weight-sensing system uses strain gauges at each corner of the front passenger seat frame to measure the weight and classify the occupant as an infant, child or adult. That classification is then used to determine the appropriate air bag deployment for the occupant, TRW said.
