S&S Tire and Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. donated $100,000 for renovations to the University of Kentucky's Pediatric Oncology Clinic.
The donation brings the university within $50,000 of the project's cost of $650,000, a university spokeswoman said. The project includes building a new pediatric oncology clinic in the same general area as the existing clinic, which opened in 1992.
Findlay, Ohio-based Cooper has worked with Children's Miracle Network for several years and decided to join the tire maker's customer, S&S Tire, in making the donation to the pediatric clinic, said Tom Dattilo, Cooper's chairman, president and CEO. The university's hospital is part of the Miracle Network.
S&S Tire raised $50,000-including $3,000 from the general public-that was matched by Cooper, an S&S Tire spokesman said.
He said the company also is involved with other fund-raising efforts with the university. The dealership is sponsoring a children's charity classic golf outing in June to raise money for the university's Lucille P. Markey Cancer Center, which treats adults. The dealership also has a continuing program that raises money with children's games, such as a basketball toss, at various functions, including school or community outings. For $1, children playing the games get a university T-shirt. The dealership then donates 25 percent of the proceeds to the group sponsoring the outing, such as a local parent-teacher organization.
