CHARLOTTE, N.C. (June 2, 2003) — James E. “Jim” Bounds, a 50-year tire industry veteran, will retire from American Tire Distributors Inc. by Aug. 31.
Mr. Bounds, who has served as the general manager of the company's Orlando, Fla., distribution center since 1989, will continue in his position until a successor is named. The Charlotte-based distributor said it expects to complete the transition by August.
“For 50 years I have been fortunate to learn from and work with the best in the business, and I am proud of what we have accomplished together to make this industry what it is today,” Mr. Bounds said in a statement. “The best part of my job has been the lasting friendships that have developed over the years, and it's what I'll miss the most.”
Mr. Bounds started in the tire industry in 1954 with an internship at Lee Tire & Rubber Co. After various positions there, he became regional sales manager at Gates Rubber Co. in 1962. After 12 years there, Mr. Bounds moved to the Jim Martin Tire Co. in Orlando, Fla., to work as vice president of the wholesale division.
In 1989, ITCO Tire Co., a predecessor of ATD, bought Jim Martin Tire. For the past 14 years, Mr. Bounds has maintained some of the highest sales within the company and also served as a board member and officer of the Florida Independent Tire Dealers and Retreaders Association, ATD said.
