AKRON (March 25, 2003)—Hoyt M. Wells, retired Goodyear president, vice chairman and chief operating officer, died March 24. He was 76.
A 44-year veteran of Goodyear, Mr. Wells joined the tire maker as an engineer at its power transmission products plant in Lincoln, Neb., in 1951. Four years later, he moved to the former North Chicago, Ill., hose manufacturing facility as engineering manager. Mr Wells transferred in 1964 to the molded and extruded products plant in St. Marys, Ohio, then became plant manager there five years later.
In 1972, Mr. Wells was named vice president of general products for the subsidiary Goodyear Canada Inc. in Toronto. He was assigned to Detroit as an automotive account executive in 1977, holding that post until his reassignment to Akron as a corporate vice president in 1980.
He was elected executive vice president and named president of general products in June 1987 and joined Goodyear's board of directors in 1988. In 1991 he was named president and COO of Goodyear and in 1994 was elected vice chairman. He retired from Goodyear in November 1995.
