NASHVILLE, Tenn. (March 6, 2003) — Bridgestone-brand run-flat tires will be an original-equipment option on the redesigned 2004 Toyota Sienna minivan.
Nashville-based Bridgestone/Firestone said its Bridgestone Corp. parent firm will provide its B380RFT run-flat tire in P225/60R17 size on the all-wheel drive minivan.
BFS claims its run-flats continue to function near normal handling even when fully deflated, allowing the driver to control the vehicle. The tires have an in-cab pressure monitoring device to let motorists know when the tire is deflating.
Bridgestone's run-flats are based on the company's Self-Supporting Run-flat Tire system (SSR). It uses a special rubber sidewall reinforcement that carries the weight of the vehicle and maintains tire shape after deflation.
The tires first became available for factory installation in the 1980s, BFS said. The tires also are fitments on high-performance sports cars and passenger coupes, including the Lexus SC430, BMW 7-Series sedans, BMW Z4, BMW Z8 and Infinity Q45.
