FONTANA, Calif. (Feb. 27, 2003)— Kumho Tire, the tire unit of South Korea's Kumho Industrial Co. Inc., has become the official tire supplier for the Formula 3 Euro Series, a new racing series.
The tire maker will provide its Ecsta Formula 3 tires for pre-season testing and for all 20 races in the series.
The Formula 3 Euro Series is a new racing championship resulting from the merger of the German and French national Formula 3 championships.
The series is expected to draw about 30 entrants at each event, with races held at some of Europe's most prestigious tracks, Kumho said. The first event is the weekend of April 25-27 at the Hockenheim Ring in Germany.
“This agreement with Formula 3 Euro Series expands Kumho's role as a major player in international motorsports,” said Rick Brennan, high performance brand manager for Kumho Tire U.S.A. Inc., based in Fontana. “Formula 3…is a great environment in which to demonstrate Kumho's technical abilities and another opportunity for us to use racing to improve our ultra-high performance tires.”
Formula 3 racers are single-seat, open-wheel chassis powered by 2-liter fuel-injected, overhead-cam four-cylinder engines from a variety of manufacturers, including General Motors/Opel, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota.
Kumho's involvement with Formula 3 began in 2000 when the Ecsta F3 tire was chosen for the Changwon Super Prix in Korea. The tires were raced in Europe for the first time in 2002 in the French F3 Championship and at the Marlboro Masters F3 event at Zandvoort, Netherlands.
