WAYNE, N.J. (Feb. 11, 2003) — Hankook Tire America Corp. has entered the U.S. road-racing arena with its selection as the spec tire for the Sports Car Club of America's Mazda Miata North American Cup Series.
While Hankook's parent company, Hankook Tire Co. Ltd. in South Korea, has been involved in motorsports for years in Asia, Australia, Canada and Europe, this is the initial racing venture for the U.S.-based unit.
Based in Wayne, Hankook will provide the new Ventus Z211 r-compound racing tires to all competitors in the series' races. Sanctioned by SCCA Pro Racing Ltd., the series features identically prepared Mazda Miatas.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for us to showcase our Ventus line of ultra-high performance tires, and for Hankook to increase its brand awareness,” said J. W. Choi, president of Hankook Tire America. “Partnering with the SCCA in the Mazda Miata Series gives us the perfect venue in which to prove the superior quality of the Ventus UHP line, and to do so where it counts—on the high-intensity track and with demanding ultra-high-performance drivers.”
This initial effort, he added, “is just the beginning of great accomplishments on the racing circuit with Ventus UHP, and with the Hankook brand as a whole.”
The Mazda Miata North American Cup Series includes East Coast and West Coast championships and a final event pitting competitors from both championships against each other. The championships feature 10 races each 30 minutes in duration.
In Europe, Hankook provides tires for several race competitions, including the Italian Formula 3 Championship, the Toyota Hankook Cup Rally Series in Greece, the Ford Focus Rally Series in Benelux and the Italian Subaru Cup for Rally Cars in Italy.
