WASHINGTON (Jan. 14, 2003)—Self-inflating tire systems on truck and trailer axles are among the fuel-saving, greenhouse gas-reducing transportation technologies the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is trying to promote in its new SmartWay Transport program.
The EPA has enlisted trucking giant Roadway Corp. and other corporations such as Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc., Nike Inc. and Federal Express Corp. in the voluntary effort, through which the agency hopes eventually to save 150 million barrels of oil annually.
Installing an automatic tire inflation system on a typical combination truck axle, the EPA estimated, could save $300 a year in tire replacement costs and another $135 in fuel costs.
