PONTIAC, Mich. (Jan. 13, 2003)—Pontiac police are looking for suspects—and a possible motive—in a double homicide at a tire store in this Detroit suburb.
Police said Richard Cummings, 57, and Steven Putman, 33, were found shot to death in the back of City Tire Co. the morning of Jan. 7. A customer knocked on the door of the shop, got no response and found the bodies. The business usually opens at 9 a.m., and the customer contacted police about 10:30 a.m., according to reports.
Mr. Cummings had owned the store, and Mr. Putman was an employee. A spokeswoman with Pontiac police said burglary did not seem to be the motive of the shootings, and other possible motives are unknown.
She said the company was “very good with our community, and everyone pretty much knows them, so the motive is really weird.”
Police had questioned one individual, but investigators do not believe he is involved, the spokeswoman said.
