WESTON, Ontario (Dec. 2, 2002) — Wholesale tire distributor Dynamic Tire Corp. has opened its third warehouse/distribution center in the U.S., in Memphis, Tenn., in a move to serve the company's U.S. customers better.
Robert Sherkin, president of Weston-based Dynamic, said the 60,000-sq.-ft. facility would let the company stock a greater number and variety of tires to meet growth projections for its Primex private brand.
"We've made a commitment to provide better distribution centers to service our customers," Mr. Sherkin told Tire Business.
Dynamic, which operates as a wholesale distributor in Canada markets the Primex brand of industrial and off-the-road tires in the U.S. The tires are manufactured offshore. The Memphis center will the company's seventh; the others are in Birmingham, Ala.; Syracuse, N.Y.; London, Ontario; Belleville, Ontario; Moncton, New Brunswick; and Montreal.
The Memphis facility is medium-sized for the company, according to Mr. Sherkin. Dynamic's largest warehouse, in Toronto, is about 100,000 square feet; its smallest, in Moncton, is about 2,000 square feet. The new Memphis center carries about the same variety of sizes as the other facilities, he said.
Dynamic had considered expanding the Alabama center, but instead opted for the new facility in Tennessee because, Mr. Sherkin said, the Memphis site was less expensive and easier to ship from.
In a Tire Business interview in May, he said Primex brand sales accounted for about 50 percent of Dynamic's overall sales of roughly $65 million (Canadian). Mr. Sherkin said Nov. 26 the brand continues to be a "significant" portion of his company's sales, and Dynamic hopes to further grow the brand.
Other avenues for that growth include a possible distribution center in the western U.S. as well as increased product offerings in the brand's agricultural program.
Mr. Sherkin said the company's current U.S. distribution centers in Alabama and New York service primarily the East Coast though they reach some regions in the West. "We are looking to continue to grow, so that's certainly possible that we can have something out West."
At the same time, Mr. Sherkin said Dynamic is continuing its effort to have a comprehensive farm/agricultural program, though he declined to outline specifics of the plan.
"We are looking at new opportunities every day," he said.
