John Joseph ``Joe'' Flynn Jr., president and founder of the Mercer-based Flynn Tire Group, died Nov. 9 at a hospital in nearby Sharon, Pa. He was 60.
Flynn Tire, which he founded in 1964, has 19 retail stores in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. The company handles Goodyear, Dunlop, Kelly, Republic, Nankang and Kumho brands and also distributes tires on a wholesale basis to several states, including Hawaii.
Mr. Flynn was born July 15, 1942, in Sharon, where he graduated from high school. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1960-1964 and received the Airman of the Year Award.
He is survived by his wife, Irena; son, ``Joe'' Flynn III, Flynn Tire's vice president of operations; daughter Tania (Flynn) Warminski, vice president retail and advertising; two brothers, including R.P. Flynn, who also is a company vice president; two sisters; and one granddaughter.
