July tire shipments to the U.S. replacement market were up in all categories with the exception of passenger tires, according to the latest Rubber Manufacturers Association data.
Replacement passenger tire shipments were down 7 percent, compared with the same month a year ago. Light truck tire shipments to the replacement market were 5.4 percent higher than those of the year-ago period. Shipments of medium and wide base truck tires likewise were up 9.8 percent and those of heavy truck tires were up 15.2 percent on a month-for-month basis.
Original equipment shipments rose 13.3 percent in the case of passenger tires, 56.3 percent for light truck tires and 30.3 percent for medium and wide base truck tires. However, OE shipments of heavy truck tires were off 2.6 percent from those of July 2001.
Year-to-date totals of replacement market shipments of passenger tires were off 0.5 percent from 2001, while those of light truck tires were up 8 percent and medium and wide base tire shipments up 10.5 percent.
