AKRON (Nov. 21, 2002) — Goodyear has expanded the distribution reach of the Dunlop brand by at least 1,250 outlets by agreeing to sell the brand through Sam's Club stores and through TBC Corp.'s retail network—Big O Tires Inc. franchised stores and Tire Kingdom Inc. outlets.
Goodyear also signed new distributors in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions, but declined to identify them.
News of the new distribution agreements was made in Goodyear's monthly investor update for October.
In that update, Goodyear said its shipments of consumer tires (passenger and light truck/sport-utility vehicles) were down 3 percent in October—about the same as the industry performance once tires replaced as part of last year's Ford Motor Co. replacement program are excluded.
On the commercial side, Goodyear said it is increasing production domestically and importing tires from its own plants in Brazil and from Sumitomo Rubber Industries Ltd. in Japan in order to meet back-ordered demand. Industry shipments of commercial replacement tires were up 9 percent over last year.
In October, industry shipments to original equipment customers increased 12 percent from a year ago for consumer tires and 29 percent for commercial tires. Goodyear´s shipments of OE tires increased less than industry levels, the Akron-based tire maker said.
