DIAMOND BAR, Calif. (Nov. 19, 2002) – The Wheel Industry Council, an industry group within the Specialty Equipment Market Association, has issued the approved version of its wheel and tire installation guidelines, completing a job that began more than three years ago.
The guidelines are being made available on a wall poster in both English and Spanish that contains information and illustrations on special handling and equipment needed to install specialty wheels properly and protect their surface finishes, WIC said.
“The members of the Wheel Industry Council worked at length to develop this poster, making certain it met all the needs and requirements of our industry," said WIC Chairman Sheldon Miller, Samco Distributing Inc., Riverside, Calif. "Their time and energy were instrumental in the project's long development process.”
Representatives of the Tire Industry Association (and its predecessor group, Tire Association of North America) were involved in the drafting of the guidelines, SEMA said.
The 18- by 26.5-inch poster is available to wheel and tire retailers, installers and restylers at a cost of $25 per 100 up to 1,000. WIC members also can include reduced-size versions of the poster in their catalogs and new wheels and products packaging, SEMA said.
The guidelines cover the tire and wheel installation process from top to bottom, starting with maximum load rating and maximum tire diameter and ending with post-installation advice. Along the way, safety is highlighted at every available step of the process.
Among the topics covered are: wheel fit check; tire selection basics; tire clearance; wheel balancing; hub centering rings; wheel installation; and multi-piece wheels.
