MERCER, Pa. (Nov. 11, 2002)—John Joseph “Joe” Flynn Jr., president and founder of the Mercer-based Flynn Tire Group, died unexpectedly Nov. 9 at a hospital in nearby Sharon, Pa. He was 60.
Flynn Tire, which he founded in 1964, has 19 retail stores in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. The company handles Goodyear, Dunlop, Kelly, Republic, Nankang and Kumho brands and also distributes tires on a wholesale basis to several states including Hawaii.
Widely known in the tire industry, Mr. Flynn was born July 15, 1942, in Sharon, where he was graduated from high school. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1960-'64 and was a recipient of the Airman of the Year Award. He later attended Washburn State University in Topeka, Kans., and Youngstown State University in Ohio.
A world traveler, he and his wife Irena visited more than 25 countries.
Other survivors include: Mr. Flynn's son, “Joe” Flynn III, Flynn Tire's vice president of operations; daughter Tania (Flynn) Warminski, vice president retail and advertising; two brothers, including R.P. Flynn who also is a company vice president; two sisters; and one granddaughter.
