Purcell Tire & Rubber Co. President Bob Purcell and Marangoni Tread North America Inc. Chairman Jack Woodland were inducted into the Tire Industry Association Hall of Fame on Nov. 5 in Las Vegas during the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Week trade shows.
``This year's inductees are two of the `leading lights' in the tire industry,'' said TIA Past President Steve Disney. ``Bob and Jack have contributed greatly to the tire industry, and are richly deserving of their awards.''
The Tire Industry Hall of Fame has been created from the previous International Tire & Rubber Association (ITRA) and Tire Association of North America (TANA) Halls of Fame. ITRA and TANA merged in July to create TIA.
Mr. Purcell is an association volunteer and a contributor to the growth of TIA's annual Off-the-Road Tire Conference.
During his career, he expanded Purcell Tire from three locations to 49 in 11 states. The dealership posts $165 million in annual sales, according to Tire Business' rankings.
Mr. Purcell recently transferred 100 percent of Potosi, Mo.-based Purcell Tire's common stock to his employees via an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
Mr. Woodland has served four times as chairman of the Tread Rubber and Tire Repair Materials Manufacturers Group.
Mr. Woodland also has been chairman of the Tire Retread Information Bureau (TRIB) and has served as a member of the advisory councils of the former American Retreaders Association and the National Tire Dealers & Retreaders Association-the precursors, respectively, to ITRA and TIA.
He began his career at U.S. Rubber Co. and Market Tire Co. in Washington D.C., where he was general manager of a 13-store retail chain. From 1965-1977 he served at Pirelli Tire Co., first as president of its Italian Tires distribution subsidiary, before being promoted in 1967 to executive vice president of Pirelli Tire based in New York.
As president and CEO of Oliver Rubber Co. from 1978-1994, Mr. Woodland increased sales and profits 14-fold through the acquisition of six manufacturing companies and the establishment of international subsidiaries and licenses.
In 1997, Marangoni S.p.A. of Italy appointed Mr. Woodland president and CEO of Marangoni Tread North America to establish a U.S. marketing and sales subsidiary that would introduce the Ringtread System to dealers. In 1999 he was honored with the ARA Industry Leadership Award.
