NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Oct. 30, 2002) – BMW North America Inc. has selected Bridgestone Potenza RE050 RFT run-flat tires as original equipment on its Z4 roadster, due in dealer showrooms in November.
The Potenza is the sole tire fitment on the Z4 for now, a BMW spokeswoman said,, because Bridgestone/Firestone was the first tire maker to meet BMW's technical criteria for the new two-seat roadster. The company continues to evaluate other suppliers' tires as well, she said.
The Z4 carries no spare tire, and as such is equipped with several extended mobility features grouped together as BMW's Run-Flat Combination wheel-tire system. Besides self-supporting run-flat tires, the system includes specially developed extended hump wheel rims and a tire pressure monitoring device.
The base Z4 2.5i model comes is fitted with 225/50R16 92V tires, Bridgestone/Firestone said. The optional 17-inch tire package on the 2.5i specifies a 225/45R17 91W fitment.
That same tire is standard on the higher-performing Z4 3.0i model, while the optional fitment comprises a 225/40R18 88W on the front and 255/35R18 90W on the rear.
“Bridgestone engineers have worked closely with BMW engineers for the past three years on the development program for this application,” said Michael Martini, vice president, Bridgestone/Firestone North American consumer tire OE sales.
BFS has been supplying tires to BMW's Spartanburg, S.C., plant since 1999. In addition to the new Z4, Bridgestone brand tires are original equipment on the BMW X5, 3 Series, 7 Series and the ultra high performance Z8 models.
