The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the possible role of a Uniroyal Laredo tire in a fatal accident involving a Greenville Hospital System ambulance.
The ambulance was carrying Birdie Bell Logan, an 88-year-old woman with respiratory problems, to the hospital Oct. 1 when the vehicle crashed, killing Ms. Logan. The left rear tire on the vehicle, a Uniroyal Laredo, allegedly lost its tread before or during the accident.
Michelin North America Inc., manufacturer of the tire, has never been formally contacted about the accident by the Highway Patrol or anyone else, a Michelin spokeswoman said. At this time, the company doesn't even know the exact size and model of the tire. ``The Laredo family of Uniroyal tire lines comprises many sizes and a number of different tread designs,'' she said in a prepared statement.
``There are many potential causes for a tread separation or tread detachment, and most are use- or abuse-related,'' the spokeswoman added.
The Highway Patrol's investigation of the accident is ongoing, and it probably won't release any conclusions until after the first of November, a spokesman said.
