MONTREAL (Sept. 11, 2002) — When Seahawks Stadium opens Sept. 15 in Seattle, it will be the first National Football League stadium to use FieldTurf, an artificial playing turf with an underlayer of ground rubber and silica, as its main playing surface.
One week later, the Detroit Lions will inaugurate Ford Field with a FieldTurf surface partly made of recycled tires from the massive Firestone recall.
Montreal-based FieldTurf Inc. to date has installed more than 430 athletic surfaces in North America, Europe and New Zealand, including the two NFL stadiums and practice fields for eight other NFL teams.
