AKRON (Aug. 22, 2002)—Alan L. Ockene, former president and CEO of General Tire Inc., died Aug. 20 in Akron. He was 71.
Mr. Ockene spent nearly four years at the helm of General Tire and became the first American to serve on the eight member executive board of Germany's Continental A.G., which had purchased the company in 1987.
He spoke five languages, including French, Spanish, Portuguese and German.
Prior to joining General, Mr. Ockene spent 17 years at Goodyear, first as managing director of the firm's German subsidiary, then as vice president for Europe and Africa. He also served the company as vice president for Goodyear Aerospace and was vice president for Latin America when he left the company to join General.
In 1995, with a year remaining on his five-year contract as General's president and CEO, Mr. Ockene opted not to stay with the Conti subsidiary in its move from Akron to Charlotte, N.C.
Mr. Ockene was active in the Akron community and served on several corporate boards. In addition, he was involved in numerous charitable, educational and civic organizations. He was a director of the Akron Community Foundation, chairman of local United Way Fund Campaign in 1995, a trustee of Akron General Hospital, chairman of the Akron Regional Development Board, chairman of the U.S.-Mexico Chamber of Commerce and a board member the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges, to name a few.
A native of Englewood, N.J., Mr. Ockene was a graduate of Yale University, the American Graduate School of International Management and New York University.
He is survived by his wife Patricia, two sons, a daughter and three grandchildren.
