AKRON (Aug. 14, 2002) — For the first time in nearly four decades, Goodyear's entire fleet of North American-based blimps will fly in formation, following the Sept. 5 christening of the Spirit of America.
The newest member of the fleet will be christened that morning at the tire maker's Wingfoot Lake blimp hangar, based near Akron. The new airship, along with the Akron-based Spirit of Goodyear, the Pompano Beach, Fla.-based Stars & Stripes, and the Carson, Calif.-based Eagle, will take flight in the greater Akron area after the morning event.
The Spirit of America is replacing the Eagle in the fleet. The Eagle will make its farewell journey to Akron in late August.
“Given the spirit of this great country, and the way the people of the United States of America have come together as one patriotic nation, we could think of no better tribute than to christen the airship the Spirit of America,” said Goodyear Chairman and CEO Sam Gibara.
Along with the christening, Goodyear will bring together winners of its national Spirit of America essay contest.
