WASHINGTON (July 12, 2002)—The Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association, a group representing parts and equipment suppliers to the auto industry, issued a statement in support of the government's requiring auto, parts and tire manufacturers to report information indicating possible product defects.
The final standard is a vast improvement over the original proposal, which would have imposed overly burdensome reporting requirements on auto equipment manufacturers, said MEMA and its affiliate, the Original Equipment Suppliers Association. Tire industry associations gave the early warning standard a mixed review after its issuance July 10.
