WASHINGTON (July 9, 2002)—The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has posted its final rule on “early warning” reporting requirements on its Web site and will publish it July 10 in the Federal Register.
Under the Transportation Recall Efficiency, Accountability and Documentation (TREAD) Act, NHTSA was charged to set rules under which tire and auto manufacturers report information that might indicate the presence of a product defect.
The Rubber Manufacturers Association and the Tire Industry Association were still reviewing the 126-page document before its official issuance.
The RMA said it found some encouraging features in the final rule, such as no requirement for tire makers to file field reports. TIA felt requirements for consumer complaints and warranty adjustments will insure “tire dealers will be less likely to appease dissatisfied customers in cases where tire abuse is apparent.”
