NEW YORK (June 27, 2002)—Three consumer groups have made good their threat to sue the U.S. Department of Transportation over its final rule on tire pressure monitoring devices.
The standard issued May 30 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is arbitrary and capricious because it allows auto manufacturers to specify “indirect” systems which record tire pressure through the operation of anti-lock brake systems rather than far more effective devices that record each vehicle tire's pressure directly, said Public Citizen, the New York Public Interest Research Group and the Center for Auto Safety.
The suit was filed in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York.
