WASHINGTON (June 5, 2002)—Proposed new testing and performance standards for tires are an unmitigated disaster, tire associations and auto makers told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
General Motors Corp. called the rule “among the agency's worst ever from a cost/benefit analysis,” while the Rubber Manufacturers Association said it would cost the industry more than $1.5 billion its first year and more than $400 million annually after that.
NHTSA issued the proposed rule March 5 under a mandate from the Transportation Recall Efficiency, Accountability and Documentation Act.
