WASHINGTON (May 30, 2002)—Revised performance standards for new passenger and light truck tires—due by June 1 under the Transportation Recall Efficiency, Accountability and Documentation (TREAD) Act—will be late, but probably not by much, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
At the end of April, NHTSA granted the Rubber Manufacturers Association's petition for a 30-day extension of the comment period, from May 6 to June 5, so the RMA could complete and evaluate its testing under the proposed rule. Because of the tight TREAD Act deadlines, the comment period probably won't be extended again, an agency spokesman said.
