WASHINGTON (May 2, 2002)—Tire dealers, service station operators and independent auto repairers would be exempt from liability for used or recycled oil contributed to Superfund toxic waste sites, according to a bill introduced earlier this year by Reps. Michael Capuano and Barney Frank, both D-Mass.
It is vastly important that Democrats are sponsoring this used oil exemption, because efforts to get an exemption for service stations last year in the Senate split along party lines, said Roy E. Littlefield III, director of government affairs for the International Tire & Rubber Association.
No hearings have been held, but Mr. Littlefield is hopeful that a used oil exemption can be added to Superfund reform legislation this year.
