WASHINGTON (March 18, 2002)—The automotive aftermarket breathed a sigh of relief when the Senate voted to approve an amendment to the Energy Policy Act of 2002 that rejects a provision to federally fund state vehicle scrappage programs through the Department of Energy.
The measure would have promoted scrappage of vehicles more than 15 years old. Sens. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, R-Colo., and Sam Brownback, R-Kan., led the effort to turn back the scrappage funding.
“We are very lucky to have fellow automotive enthusiasts in the Senate,” said a spokesman for the Specialty Equipment Market Association in a press release.
