BARRIE, Ontario (March 14, 2002)—Four adventuresome Canadians have taken up Goodyear-Canada's offer to legally change their surnames from Dunlop to Dunlop-Tire. The four split the “Tired of Your Name Challenge” prize of $25,000 (Canadian), each pocketing a share of $6,500.
The ex-Peter Dunlop—who ironically works for a company called Action Tire—said “money was not the motivating factor.” It was, added the Central Ontario resident, “a real fun thing to do.”
Mr. Dunlop-Tire's new “relatives” are Traci Dunlop-Tire of Calgary, Jason Dunlop-Tire of Winnepeg and Bill Dunlop-Tire of Toronto.
Though only open to adult Canadians, the tire maker said the promo got inquiries from across North America and even from Hungary.
