WASHINGTON (Feb. 19, 2002)—The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will make a call for bids in March for an outside contractor to conduct testing of commercial vehicle retreads.
Motivated by the Transportation Recall Efficiency, Accountability and Documentation (TREAD) Act, the agency wants to compare the performance of truck retreads with federal standards for new truck tires.
NHTSA officials have already consulted with tire industry organizations on its plan.
