WASHINGTON-In October, for the first time in 13 months, U.S. monthly shipments of replacement medium truck tires exceeded the total from the corresponding year-ago month. Replacement shipments of passenger and light truck tires, though, were both down, contributing to declines in the year-to-date figures.
Despite a 12.2-percent jump in October to 1.28 million units, though, year-to-date 2001 shipments of commercial vehicle tires fell 11 percent to 11.5 million units, the latest Rubber Manufacturers Association data show. Replacement shipments of heavy truck tires also gained ground, finishing 17.8 percent ahead of October 2000.
Replacement passenger tire shipments fell 11.6 percent in October, to 17.2 million units, dragging down the 10-month total to 162.3 million units, or 3.5 percent below the January-October 2000 total.
Light truck tire shipments to the aftermarket slipped 1.9 percent to 3.1 million units. The year-to-date decline was 7.7 percent.
