BIRMINGHAM, England—Volkswagen A.G. has awarded South Korea's Kumho Industrial Co. Ltd. a contract to supply 200,000 tires a year for the new VW Polo compact.
The contract, Kumho's first in Europe, covers Kumho's Power Max 769 tire in size 185/60R14, Kumho said. The company singled out work done by its European Technical Centre near Birmingham as critical to meeting Volkswagen´s exacting performance specifications for its latest small car.
“Kumho sees Europe as a key market for both OE and replacement products,” Kumho U.K. Managing Director J.M. Kim said. ”We have invested heavily in our U.K. test facilities to ensure our products conform to European standards and more than match our competitors in terms of price, performance and durability.
“This new association with Volkswagen will bring significant benefits for Kumho, particularly in Germany and in the U.K., where we are rapidly building a strong replacement customer base for our high quality products,” he concluded.
Kumho already supplies Volkswagen with tires for the Mexican-built Beetle.
