LYNDHURST, N.J. (Jan. 3, 2002)—Englewood Tire Distributors (ETD) has become an American Car Care Centers Inc. distributor, covering New Jersey, the greater New York City metropolitan area and the Hudson Valley, much of the Philadelphia metro area and Connecticut.
ETD in effect takes over responsibility for the territory Wholesale Tire Co. Inc. (WTC) covered for ACCC, plus a bit more.
Wholesale Tire recently agreed to sell its 18 greater New York/Long Island retail stores to Somerset Tire Service Inc. of Bound Brook, N.J., which said it does not intend to operate them as ACCC locations. As a result, WTC no longer was in a position to service other independent ACCC dealers in the territory, making a change in distributors necessary, according to Len Lewin, president and chief operating officer of ACCC.
ETD will assume responsibility for about 50 ACCC accounts in the territory, principally in New York and New Jersey, according to John Boyle, president of Englewood Tire, who estimated the potential for new business at $20 million.
ETD will convert its nine retail stores in New Jersey to ACCC signage and offer the ACCC program to its 29 affiliated ETD Discount Tire Centers, Mr. Boyle said. ETD also plans to open a new store, in Wayne, N.J., before mid-year.
“We had built a good regional network of dealers,” he said, “but we lacked access to a nationwide network of products or services. We believe we now have a program that will be attractive to our dealers. Certainly the existing ACCC dealers embrace the program.”
Prior to gaining the ACCC distribution, ETD already had planned to expand its operations in Connecticut and Long Island, Mr. Boyle said. A new distribution center in Wallingford, Conn., is due to open in March, and a site for a Long Island distribution point is being researched. These new sites will alleviate unduly long drives from Lyndhurst, Mr. Boyle said, improving service to customers in those areas.
Dom Lamantea, the ACCC program manager for WTC, is moving to ETD to help assure continuity as the program shifts to ETD, Mr. Lewin said.
ETD handles Bridgestone, BFGoodrich, Continental, Firestone, General, Michelin, Uniroyal and Yokohama tire brands and American Racing custom wheels.
