PLANO, Texas-Transplace Inc., a provider of logistics and transportation management services to six of the nation's major commercial truckload carriers, will offer Yokohama-brand tires to subscribing member carriers at ``substantial'' savings, according to an agreement announced by Yokohama Tire Corp.
Combined, the commercial carriers operate more than 38,000 tractors and nearly 92,000 trailers and 23,000 intermodal containers. The agreement allows Transplace members to make tire purchases at any Yokohama dealer location throughout the U.S.
``By teaming up with Transplace, we can continue with our philosophy of servicing carriers' growing needs as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible,'' said Jim MacMaster, executive vice president of Yokohama Tire Corp., in a prepared statement.
``Tires clearly represent one of the largest expenses for our subscribing members, and we are committed to providing members with savings on quality products from quality manufacturers,'' said Michael Ellenburg, executive vice president of Fleet/Procurement Services for Transplace. ``The arrangement with Yokohama will reduce our members' total tire expenditures.''
Transplace was formed in July 2000 by the merger of the logistics business units of: Covenant Transport Inc. of Chattanooga, Tenn.; J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. of Lowell, Ark.; M.S. Carriers Inc. of Memphis, Tenn. (since merged with Swift Transportation Co. Inc.); Swift Transportation Co. Inc. of Phoenix; U.S. Xpress Enterprises Inc. of Chattanooga; and Werner Enterprises Inc. of Omaha, Neb.
Transplace's Fleet/Procurement Services division helps subscribing members reduce procurement costs through discount programs on more than 150,000 items such as truck and trailer parts, lubricants, tools, shop supplies and office products. The venture manages more than 1.2 million truckload and intermodal shipments and 5.7 million less-than-truckload shipments per year, Transplace said.
In addition to the members' fleets, existing contracts among the six companies and their partner carriers represent more than 100,000 additional trucks, Transplace said.
