COLUMBIA, S.C. (Nov. 14, 2001)— Michelin North America Inc. is planning to expand its 3-year-old earthmover tire plant in Lexington, S.C., pledging to invest up to $200 million in a project that could create as many as 200 jobs.
Most of the new jobs likely will be filled by Michelin workers facing job cuts elsewhere, company officials said. Michelin earlier this year announced plans to cut nearly 2,000 jobs through 2003 as part of cost-saving measures.
Michelin opened the Lexington plant in 1998 and expanded it to 500,000 square feet within a year of its opening. The plant employs 200.
Earlier this year, Michelin added a production hall to the plant for making radial farm tires.
The company did not comment on the size of the expansion, or the effect on capacity.
