WASHINGTON (Oct. 18, 2001)—Tire and auto manufacturers are far apart on how they want a final rule on tire pressure monitoring systems to read, according to comments submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Among the issues are how underinflation should be defined and whether direct or indirect monitoring systems should be mandated.
The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers went so far as to accuse tire industry commenters of misunderstanding the NHTSA proposed rule or misrepresenting the results of NHTSA research on tire pressure monitoring.
