AKRON (Oct. 12, 2001)—A Goodyear spokesman has confirmed that Kelly is among several brands the company no longer will be offering in the European marketplace. Others, including brands previously sold primarily in Eastern Europe, also will be dropped, according to the German magazine, Wirtschafts-Woche. No timetable for the move has been announced.
The publication, following an interview with Goodyear Chairman and CEO Sam G. Gibara, recently issued a news release stating erroneously that the Akron-based tire maker was interested in acquiring the tire operations of Italy's Pirelli S.p.A.
Goodyear, in response, issued a news release branding the magzine's statement untrue and saying that it had “misrepresented” Mr. Gibara's comments concerning Pirelli. The companay's statement, however, did not address the German magazine's assertion that it was streamlining its European brand offerings.
