JAKARTA (Sept. 28, 2001)—Between 1,000 and 3,000 Muslims burned U.S. flags and an effigy of President George W. Bush, calling for a holy war against the U.S. if it attacks Afghanistan, according to reports from the BBC and the Jakarta Post. The U.S. government has authorized the voluntary evacuation of non-essential embassy personnel, and the State Department is warning U.S. citizens not to travel to Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim country.
“We have not heard of a single instance yet of a delayed shipment” of natural rubber because of the political unrest in Indonesia, according to Kip Tobin, president of the Rubber Trade Association of North America.
The price of Standard Indonesian Rubber 20 on Sept. 27 was 27 cents per pound delivered to the U.S., and has remained pretty much unchanged for the past week, Mr. Tobin said.
