FRANKFURT, Germany (Sept. 11, 2001)—Goodyear and Siemens VDO Automotive, a specialist in active electronics systems, are joining forces to develop an advanced tire pressure warning system. The joint research project will aim to develop a system to monitor low tire air pressure and excessive tire temperatures, utilizing Goodyear´s expertise in tires and tire pressure monitoring and Siemens VDO´s proficiency in electronics, radio frequency, wireless and vehicle system integration technologies.
“This joint development agreement builds on tire air pressure monitoring work done by both Goodyear and Siemens VDO,´´ Samir Gibara, Goodyear chairman and CEO said.
The agreement ties in with the passage of the Transportation, Recall, Enhancement, Accountability and Documentation (TREAD) Act that will require, effective November 2003, all new vehicles have a system to alert the driver to low air pressure in one or more tires.
Both companies anticipate that other countries will soon enact similar legislation. Siemens VDO Automotive supplies electronics, electrical and mechatronic technologies to the automotive industry.
