MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Aug. 23, 2001)—Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman has canceled the state's contract with Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. after state troopers complained of safety concerns.
“In my opinion, there are too many unanswered questions regarding the safety of these tires, and as such, I am directing you to immediately cancel the State's contract with Firestone,” Mr. Siegelman wrote to Alabama Finance Director Henry Mabry.
A BFS spokeswoman told Tire Business the company has not yet seen any formal letter of cancellation, but BFS believes Alabama has a rule requiring pursuit vehicles to replace tires with those that are original equipment-approved. Most of the state's vehicles are made by Ford Motor Co., she said, which BFS no longer supplies.
Officials from the state governor's office were not available for comment at press time.
