DES MOINES, Iowa (Aug. 6, 2001)—The United Steelworkers of America and Titan International Inc. left the bargaining table Aug. 2 after their most productive week of negotiations since USWA Local 164 struck at the company's Des Moines farm tire plant more than three years ago.
But the two sides did not reach a tentative contract agreement, despite an Aug. 2 Titan release saying one had been reached on a more than five-year deal.
The company did say, however, that "some outstanding issues must be resolved, including a back-to-work agreement."
Local 164 president John Peno confirmed Aug. 3 that the two sides have reached tentative agreements on several critical issues.
Other items, including a firm contract that would bring his members back to the plant, are left to resolve, he said. Negotiators for Titan and the union plan to meet again Aug. 8.
