WASHINGTON (July 20, 2001)—The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is taking steps toward forcing the recall of additional Firestone Wilderness AT tires following Bridgestone/Firestone Inc.´s refusal to recall them on a voluntary basis, the U.S. Department of Transportation has announced.
The DOT, in a prepared statement issued July 19, said NHTSA has completed its defect investigation of the Firestone tires in question and apprised BFS of the results.
"Firestone was asked to recall some of the tires and they refused to do so," the DOT said. "Therefore, NHTSA will issue an initial defect decision, the next step toward a forced recall.
"It is premature to discuss the initial decision in detail. NHTSA´s responsibility is the safety of the American people, and we will adhere to a process that will ensure the recall of unsafe tires," the DOT said.
