SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (June 28, 2001) –Discount Tire Co. has teamed up with the Rubber Manufacturers Association to offer consumers a free air pressure gauge and tire maintenance brochure at events planned for six Southwestern cities this summer.
The program got under way June 28 with "Tire Pressure Check Day " events at two Discount Tire locations in the Phoenix area. Similar events are also planned for Phoenix, San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, Albuquerque and San Diego.
Throughout the summer, nearly 200 Discount Tire stores in the six cities will stock the consumer information brochure and both the RMA and Discount Tire Web sites will feature additional information on proper tire care and maintenance.
Scottsdale-based Discount Tire is one of North America´s largest independent retail tire dealership, with approximately 450 outlets in 18 states. The RMA, headquartered Washington, D.C., developed the "Be Tire Smart – Play Your PART" program to educate consumers on the proper care and maintenance of tires.
Discount Tire CEO Gary T. Van Brunt noted that not only is a regular maintenance program important for the safety of the driver and passengers, "it will promote longer tread life, a smoother ride, more uniform tire wear, and it will result in reduced gas consumption and better vehicle handling.”
RMA President and CEO Donald B. Shea said sharing such information is especially important at this time of year when consumers traditionally prepare to hit the road for summer travel.
A recent RMA-sponsored survey conducted in the Southwest, the association said, showed that 61 percent of participating drivers earned a grade of “D” or lower on a basic tire safety quiz. Only 34 percent knew the proper place to check for the recommended tire pressure for their vehicles' tires and only 28 percent knew how often their vehicles tires should be rotated.
In spite of these low awareness numbers, 97 percent of drivers felt that maintenance of their tires was at least somewhat important, the RMA said.
Other organizations taking part in the "Be Tire Smart – Play Your PART" program include the Tire Association of North America and the Arizona Tire and Service Dealers Association (ATSDA).
TANA is making brochures available to its members nationwide, in an outreach effort beginning this month. Earlier this month, the ATSDA announced that it will provide the RMA's consumer information brochure to its members throughout the state for distribution to consumers.
