STUTTGART, Germany (May 29, 2001)–DaimlerChryslerA.G. has announced the appointment of Rainer Schmückle as president of its U.S.-based Freightliner L.L.C. unit, replacing Jim Hebe, who recently resigned that post.
Mr. Schmückle, considered a “turnaround expert” in some circles, served as chief financial officer for the Portland, Ore.-based truck and trailer manufacturer from 1994-'97. Most recently, he was senior vice president controlling for the Germany-based parent company.
Roger Nielsen, previously vice president-business segment specialized vehicles for Freightliner, was named chief operating officer of Freightliner, DaimlerChrysler said.
In view of the weakness in the U.S. demand for heavy trucks, Freightliner has begun a “comprehensive profit improvement program, focused on reducing production capacity and cutting costs,” the company said.
