NASHVILLE, Tenn. (May 23, 2001)–Ford Motor Co. refuses to look at the real issue involving tire failures on the Ford Explorer, which is the Explorer itself, Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. CEO John T. Lampe said in responding to Ford's announcement that it is recalling 13 million Firestone Wilderness AT tires.
“Our tires are safe,” Mr. Lampe said in a prepared statement. “When we have a problem, we admit it and we fix it.... Ford refused to look at issues surrounding the Explorer in August. Ford failed to do that today."
Ford said it would spend $3 billion before taxes on the recall, which will include 1.5 million Wilderness AT tires used to partially replace the 6.5 million tires recalled Firestone tires last year.
