GREENVILLE, S.C. (March 16, 2001) — Michelin North America Inc. is throttling back production temporarily at two truck tire and four car tire plants to allow it to adjust inventories in face of weak market conditions.
The most significant cutback will be a two-week shutdown at the company´s Spartanburg, S.C., truck tire facility, where 1,450 workers produce more than 40,000 tires a week. Employees are being urged to take vacation time or unpaid days off, according to local media reports.
The other truck tire plant affected is Waterville, Nova Scotia, where two truck tire building groups will be taken off-line for two months, affecting 30 temporary employees.
The affected car tire facilities are: Opelika, Ala., where production will be idled for eight days; Kitchener, Ontario, one week; Tuscaloosa, Ala., three days; and Fort Wayne, Ind., two days.
