SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (March 7, 2001) — Discount Tire Co.´s "tires.com" on-line business will sponsor the American Speed Association´s March 10 race at the Irwindale Speedway in Irwindale, Calif.
The "tires.com 300" will be ASA´s first West Coast race in the group´s 34-year history, and also marks the first time Discount Tire has been involved in motorsports sponsorship.
The 20-race AC/Delco ASA series is co-sponsored by Michelin North America´s BFGoodrich Tires unit, which supplies all competitors with "spec" BFG radial race tires. The series features high-performance stock cars — Ford Taurus, Chevrolet Monte Carlo etc. — powered by fuel-injected Vortec ASA 5700 engines.
"This is our company´s first race sponsorship, and we´re excited about the fun and interest that surrounds it," said Rob Wise, assistant vice president of marketing for Discount Tire. "Many of our employees will be involved in the race, including the flagman, starter and pitcrew representatives."
Discount Tire — which operates in California as America´s Tire — BFGoodrich and ASA are working together to promote the event, a 300-lap race around Irwindale´s half-mile oval. TNN Sports will televise the event live, starting at 6 p.m. PST on March 10.
