FINDLAY, Ohio (Feb. 22, 2001) — Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. will start occupying a new West Coast distribution center later this month, in the hope of starting shipments from the Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., facility in April.
The leased 410,000-sq.-ft. center, which will replace an 83,000-sq.-ft. warehouse in nearby Buena Park, will enable Cooper to expand its West Coast distribution capabilities and help reinforce its commitment to the Pirelli alliance, according to Bill Woeste, operations planning and logistics director.
Shipments of Cooper and Pirelli brand tires are scheduled to begin in April, with other Cooper brands to follow in the second quarter. The Buena Park facility, owned by Cooper, will be phased out at an appropriate time later, a spokesman said.
The new warehouse—Cooper´s eighth tire distribution center in the U.S.—is part of a revamp of its distribution network, the company said, designed to allow it to provide more customers with greater flexibility in placing mixed brand orders, the spokesman said. In addition, Pirelli Tire North America Inc. operates a distribution center in Jackson, Miss., for Pirelli brand products.
The new center will operate five days a week with split shifts, and employment of 24. Cooper did not disclose its investment in the 58 docking-door facility, which will have a capacity of 600,000 to 700,000 tires at any one time.
