CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Feb. 22, 2001) — Heafner Tire Group Inc. plans to exit the tire retailing business in Arizona this year, after determining the cost of expanding its retail presence there was too great.
The company will continue to serve retail tire dealerships in the area through its CPW wholesaling business, however, according to J. Michael Gaither, executive vice president of Heafner.
Heafner started its withdrawal on Feb. 2, when it agreed to sell an eight-bay Tire Outlet Plus store in Mesa, Ariz., and five undeveloped sites in the Phoenix metro area to Purcell Tire & Rubber Co., which plans to build new stores on the sites and expand its presence in the area to 17 stores before year-end.
The company did not divulge whether it would sell or close its nine remaining Tire Outlet Plus stores in Arizona this year.
Heafner acquired Tire Outlet Plus in early 1999, but has been unable to build the chain into a strong enough competitor to compete effectively with Discount Tire Co., Purcell, Fletcher´s Tire & Auto Service, and others, Mr. Gaither said.
Tire Outlet Plus operates under the auspices of Heafner´s Winston Tire division.
